FORT WiLLIAM FIRST NATION, Anemki Wadjiw- Georjann Morriseau is the newly elected Chief for the Fort William First Nation. The votes were cast on Sunday in a hotly contested election. The vote counting started this morning, and the results were released tonight.
To me, Georjann represents the emergence of the New People in our community who are going to bring about the transformation that we’ve been seeking for generations. Now is the time of the Seventh Fire – the New People are here and their spirit is embodied in Georjann’s tireless efforts to love our community. The thunderbings are in her heart. Damien Lee
Councillor at Large Aldo Ruberto states, “She was a great councillor and will make a fantastic leader…lots of respect for her ability to problem solve ….I have had the pleasure of woking with her and have been impressed with the way she conducts herself…congratulations look forward to working with her again…”
Georjann Morriseau takes over from long-time Chief Peter Collins.
“I was raised by my Grandmother and the teachings she has given me have lead me down this path,” shared Chief Morriseau. “Staying true to my convictions, living a healthy lifestyle, all while raising a young family of 3 boys has provided me with strength as a woman, mother and leader.
“My drive has come from many strong people in my life, and I am grateful for all the support I have received. I feel it is important to give back to our community, whether be through volunteering, charitable work or any other means that are available.
“I have had many opportunities, from being appointed as a Director for the Ontario Trillium Foundation, to working with First Nations at the regional level to help build on community governance; strengthening foundations which are vital to achieve collective visions and long term sustainability”.
Fort William First Nation now has one of the younger Chiefs in both its history, and in Canada.
